مع اقتراب موعد تنفيذ حكم الإعدام بحقها، تتشبث كريستا بايك، المحكوم عليها بالإعدام في ولاية تينيسي الأمريكية، بمحاولة قانونية أخيرة لتأجيل الحكم أو تخفيفه، قبل الموعد المقرر لتنفيذه في 30 سبتمبر الجاري. وإذا نُفذ الحكم، ستكون بايك أول امرأة تُعدم في الولاية منذ أكثر من 200 عام.
وقدم فريق الدفاع عن بايك، البالغة من العمر 50 عامًا، طلب عفو مؤلفًا من 226 صفحة إلى حاكم الولاية بيل لي، طالبًا استبدال عقوبة الإعدام بالسجن مدى الحياة دون إمكانية الإفراج المشروط. ويستند الطلب، وفق ما أورده فريقها القانوني، إلى ظروف تعرضت لها خلال طفولتها، إضافة إلى عوامل نفسية وسلوكية، فضلًا عن كونها كانت في الثامنة عشرة من عمرها وقت ارتكاب الجريمة.
مخاوف من الحقنة القاتلة
وتسعى بايك كذلك إلى تغيير طريقة تنفيذ الحكم، إذ طلبت اللجوء إلى الشنق بدلًا من الحقنة القاتلة، مستندة إلى مخاوف من احتمال تعرضها لمعاناة شديدة أثناء عملية الإعدام.
كما طلبت، في حال رفض تغيير طريقة التنفيذ، أن يتولى تنفيذ الحكم طاقم من النساء فقط. ويقول محاموها إن وجود رجال ضمن فريق التنفيذ قد يؤدي، بحسب حجتهم القانونية، إلى تفاقم الأعراض المرتبطة باضطراب ما بعد الصدمة الذي تعاني منه نتيجة ما تصفه ملفات الدفاع بإساءات تعرضت لها خلال طفولتها.
ويأتي ذلك في وقت حددت فيه السلطات موعد تنفيذ الحكم عند الساعة العاشرة صباحًا بالتوقيت المحلي في 30 سبتمبر، ما لم يصدر قرار قضائي أو إداري يغير ذلك.
جريمة تعود إلى عام 1995
تعود القضية إلى عام 1995، عندما كانت بايك في الثامنة عشرة من عمرها، إذ أُدينت بقتل كولين سليمَر، البالغة 19 عامًا، في مركز «جوب كوربس» بمدينة نوكسفيل.
وبحسب سجلات القضية، شارك بايك في الجريمة صديقها آنذاك تاداريل شيب، الذي كان يبلغ 17 عامًا وقت ارتكابها، بينما كانت شادولا بيترسون، البالغة 18 عامًا، طرفًا آخر في القضية وشهدت ضد بايك وشيب.
وأُدينت بايك في عام 1996 وحُكم عليها بالإعدام، في حين صدر بحق شيب حكم بالسجن مدى الحياة ولم يكن مؤهلًا لعقوبة الإعدام بسبب صغر سنه وقت الجريمة. أما بيترسون فحصلت على المراقبة بعد تعاونها مع الادعاء.
وتقول الجهات المدافعة عن بايك إن طلب العفو الحالي يستند، من بين أمور أخرى، إلى تاريخ طويل من إساءات الطفولة والاضطرابات النفسية، بينما تؤكد السجلات الرسمية أن حكم الإعدام ما زال قائمًا وأن تنفيذه مقرر في 30 سبتمبر، ما لم يصدر قرار آخر.
As the execution date approaches, Krista Pike, sentenced to death in the state of Tennessee, is clinging to a final legal attempt to delay or reduce her sentence before the scheduled execution on September 30. If the sentence is carried out, Pike will be the first woman executed in the state in over 200 years.
Pike's defense team, who is 50 years old, submitted a 226-page clemency petition to Governor Bill Lee, requesting that the death penalty be replaced with life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. The petition is based, according to her legal team, on circumstances she faced during her childhood, as well as psychological and behavioral factors, in addition to the fact that she was eighteen years old at the time of the crime.
Concerns About the Lethal Injection
Pike is also seeking to change the method of execution, requesting to be hanged instead of receiving a lethal injection, citing concerns about the possibility of experiencing severe suffering during the execution process.
Furthermore, if the change in method is denied, she has requested that only a team of women carry out the execution. Her lawyers argue that the presence of men on the execution team could exacerbate symptoms related to the post-traumatic stress disorder she suffers from due to what the defense files describe as abuses she endured during her childhood.
This comes at a time when authorities have set the execution time for 10:00 AM local time on September 30, unless a judicial or administrative decision changes that.
Crime Dating Back to 1995
The case dates back to 1995, when Pike was eighteen years old, as she was convicted of killing 19-year-old Colin Slimmer at the "Job Corps" center in Knoxville.
According to case records, Pike was involved in the crime with her then-boyfriend Tadaril Ship, who was 17 years old at the time of the crime, while Shadola Peterson, who was 18, was another party in the case and testified against Pike and Ship.
Pike was convicted in 1996 and sentenced to death, while Ship received a life sentence and was not eligible for the death penalty due to his young age at the time of the crime. Peterson received probation after cooperating with the prosecution.
Advocates for Pike state that the current clemency request is based, among other things, on a long history of childhood abuse and mental disorders, while official records confirm that the death sentence remains in effect and is scheduled for execution on September 30, unless another decision is issued.
