What has brought the possibility of war back to the forefront after it seemed that the diplomatic door was still open? The answer does not start with the rapidly changing data in the past few hours, but rather with the shift that has occurred in the conditions of the confrontation itself. At a time when communications were supposed to provide an exit from the ongoing confrontation between Washington and Tehran for the past seven months, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf stated that his country would fight and negotiate at the same time, rejecting a return to the previous negotiation format, and announcing that the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is linked to the fulfillment of Iranian conditions and the implementation of American commitments.
These positions do not mean that Iran has closed the door on negotiations, but they do indicate that Tehran does not want a return to the negotiating table to be a return to the pre-confrontation status. Here lies the problem: Washington is faced with an Iranian stance that wants to retain the cards of war during negotiations, while it will have to decide whether to treat these conditions as an entry point for talks or consider them an attempt to impose a new reality that it cannot accept.
In Washington, a different signal came at a different timing, as President Donald Trump returned from Camp David to the White House ahead of schedule, without the administration providing an official explanation for the return. This cannot be considered evidence of a decision for a strike, but the timing hints at additional importance with the escalation of attacks in the region, coinciding with American warnings of the possibility of rapid escalation.
Then other indicators emerged to add weight to the scene: American warnings to its citizens in several countries in the region, concerns about disruptions in air travel, and reports of a review of American military options, alongside discussions about activity in Iranian facilities related to the nuclear program. All of this does not individually constitute evidence that an attack has been decided, but it also raises the question: Is Washington rearranging its options on the basis that negotiations alone are no longer sufficient?
Here, Trump's return to the White House becomes more than just a change in schedule. The final decision, if a military decision is under consideration, remains in Washington, not in Tehran's statements. What Qalibaf said only clarifies that Iran does not want to make a concession prior to negotiations and is prepared to keep the tools of confrontation alongside political communications. So what will Washington do if Iran refuses to return to the previous conditions? So far, there is no publicly available information proving that the "decisive strike" has been decided. However, the convergence of these developments reveals that the negotiation window is no longer separate from military readiness, and that any American decision regarding the next step could redraw the entire scene.
