The former Hungarian Minister of Culture, Balázs Hankó, was led into the district court in Budapest handcuffed and surrounded by masked security personnel, where the judge ordered his detention pending investigation in one of the largest corruption cases affecting the legacy of former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
The detention of Hankó came just hours after the Hungarian parliament voted overwhelmingly (139 votes with no opposition) in favor of lifting his parliamentary immunity. Hankó had spent his last hours inside the parliament building with his family and deputies from the former ruling right-wing party "Fidesz," clinging to denial and describing the investigations as a "political show trial."
A Dual System for Passing State Funds
The accusations from the public prosecutor focus on the period during which Hankó headed the "National Cultural Fund" alongside his ministerial position. The financial violations are distributed as follows:
Amount of embezzled funds: Hankó is accused of misusing 17.3 billion Hungarian forints (approximately 53 million dollars) between September 2025 and March 2026. Manipulation mechanism: Establishing a "dual decision-making system" that successfully circumvented legal procedures to distribute government grants through 1,079 separate cases to serve electoral and party agendas. Campaign financing under the guise of culture: Leaks revealed that the fund was pumping money into institutions and artists loyal to the "Fidesz" party, with funds being allocated to rent an entire circus for a party election festival, officially recorded as a "cultural event."Earthquake of Purging a 16-Year Legacy
This practical step is the most significant in the comprehensive anti-corruption campaign led by current Prime Minister Péter Magyar, who came to power after overthrowing the 16-year Orbán regime.
Magyar had previously indicated that the structural and systemic corruption during Orbán's era cost the country between 8% to 10% of its GDP. He confirmed through social media platforms that "millions of Hungarians are experiencing for the first time the meaning of true systemic change and equality before the law."
Suspicions did not stop at the Minister of Culture but extended to other heavyweight names in the Orbán regime:
Detention of the former Minister of Development: Authorities arrested Miklós Szita, who served as Minister of National Development between 2014 and 2018, in connection with a separate bribery case. Anger from the right-wing opposition: Leaders of the "Fidesz" party accused Magyar's government of "tyrannical abuse," vowing to hold all those involved in these prosecutions accountable in courts and politics. Removal of immunity from the Prime Minister: In a notable development showing the strictness of the procedures, the parliament also voted to lift the immunity of current Prime Minister Péter Magyar himself in a case unrelated to his current duties and dating back to before he took office.
