In the depths of the Mediterranean Sea off the Turkish coast, a rare commercial cargo remained preserved for over two thousand years before being uncovered by recent archaeological excavations. Archaeologists discovered the wreck of a ship dating back to the Roman era, carrying thousands of ceramic pieces that provide details about trade movement and the tableware used by the wealthy classes of that time.
According to the "Daily Mail," researchers found the wreck at a depth of about 55 meters off the coast of Adrasan in Antalya. Estimates suggest that the ship sailed from ancient Rhosus, located within the current borders of Hatay province, and was carrying a cargo collected from more than one pottery production center in the Mediterranean region.
Turkish Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy stated that underwater excavations, which began in 2025, have so far resulted in the extraction of thousands of pieces from the wreck.
A Diverse Cargo of Tableware
The cargo includes plates, bowls, trays, and vessels designated for serving fish and soup, with researchers identifying 122 different shapes and sizes of ceramic pieces. This diversity reflects the nature of tableware that was circulated among the affluent classes during that period.
The team also found ceramic jars coming from several Aegean islands, suggesting that the ship collected its goods from multiple production centers before continuing its journey across the Mediterranean.
Researchers believe that the ship was headed to Rome when it encountered a storm, before hitting a shallow area and sinking, leaving its cargo settled on the seabed for centuries.
Wooden Boxes Preserved the Cargo
The method of storing the vessels inside wooden boxes helped keep a large portion of them in good condition, as clay was placed between the pieces to reduce the chances of breakage during the sea voyage.
Archaeologists also found coins dating back to the first century BC, which contributed to determining the time period during which the ship likely made its last journey.
