In a move aimed at containing the military and political escalation in northern Ethiopia, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced the formation of a temporary government to manage the Tigray region for six months, in preparation for elections that he described as free and transparent, amid renewed clashes with the Tigray People's Liberation Front and fears of the unrest spreading to other countries in the Horn of Africa.

The Ethiopian Prime Minister's Office stated that the temporary administration will work to create a stable political climate that allows for elections to be held within six months, following the resurgence of fighting between federal forces and a rebel alliance, a development that has reignited fears of a return to the war that claimed hundreds of thousands of lives between 2020 and 2022.

Abiy Ahmed: The people of Tigray deserve peace and development

Abiy Ahmed stated in a message posted on the "X" platform that the people of Tigray need to break free from the cycle of conflict that has persisted for years, so they can achieve peace, ensure their right to manage their own affairs, and benefit from development opportunities that they have long been deprived of.

He added that the temporary government will also work on repairing damaged infrastructure and assisting displaced individuals in returning to their homes, at a time when the region is still facing severe humanitarian repercussions from the previous war.

No immediate comment was made by a spokesperson for the Tigray People's Liberation Front regarding the announcement of the new administration.

Military advances by Ethiopian forces

This step comes following renewed clashes between the Ethiopian government and the Tigray People's Liberation Front, which launched an attack against Abiy Ahmed's government last month, reigniting the conflict in the northern region.

Ethiopian forces and an allied militia have made significant field advances, taking control of large areas of Tigray, including the regional capital Mekelle, according to Reuters.

The Tigray People's Liberation Front was the dominant political force in Ethiopia for decades before Abiy Ahmed came to power in 2018.

An ongoing humanitarian crisis

The Tigray region continues to suffer the effects of the previous war, which has pushed hundreds of thousands to the brink of famine and caused widespread displacement and deterioration of living conditions.

According to data from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, about 750,000 residents of the region remained displaced within Ethiopia as of February, coinciding with the region facing drought conditions related to the "El Niño" phenomenon.

These conditions raise concerns that renewed fighting could deepen the humanitarian crisis and disrupt efforts for reconstruction and the return of residents to their areas.

Tensions with Eritrea and regional concerns

The repercussions of the escalation are not limited to Ethiopia's internal affairs, as the renewed conflict has severed relations between Ethiopia and Eritrea, amid Ethiopian accusations of Asmara supporting the rebels, accusations that the Eritrean government denies.

The Ethiopian government has also accused Egypt and Sudan of supporting the rebel alliance, while both countries have denied these accusations.

Concerns are growing that the unrest could spread to other areas of the Horn of Africa, which is witnessing competition between regional and international powers for influence, at a time when Ethiopia faces a dual challenge of containing military confrontations and restoring stability to a region that has not yet recovered from its previous war.
