The Chinese capital, Beijing, is heading towards becoming a "super-aged" society by 2035, as it is expected that the number of residents aged 60 and older will exceed one-third of the city's total population, amid accelerating demographic changes facing China and declining birth rates.

The official newspaper "Beijing Daily" reported that one in three people in the Chinese capital will be aged sixty or older within the next nine years, after the number of people in this age group reaches approximately 5.29 million by the end of 2025, representing 24.3% of Beijing's total population.

Increasing Pressures on Pension Systems

These projections come at a time when China is facing increasing economic and social challenges due to an aging population, as the country's population has been declining since 2022, coinciding with falling birth rates and rising numbers of retirees.

Economists and demographic experts warn that the continuation of these trends could lead to a shrinking workforce and a slowdown in domestic consumption growth, alongside increased financial pressures on pension and healthcare systems, as large numbers of workers exit the labor market in the coming years.

27 Billion Dollars to Encourage Childbirth

The Chinese government has made population planning one of the main pillars of its economic strategy, in an attempt to address the repercussions of declining birth rates and changing age demographics.

According to estimates from Reuters, the potential total cost of government measures aimed at encouraging childbirth this year could reach approximately 180 billion yuan, equivalent to 26.92 billion dollars.

Experts believe that the decline in the number of children may reflect in the future on family formation and consumer demand, adding new challenges to Beijing's efforts to boost economic growth.

Government Measures to Address Aging

In response to these transformations, local authorities in Beijing are working to expand services for the elderly and improve social support systems, including increasing basic pensions and developing healthcare and social services.

Official data revealed that the capital has 620 elderly care institutions, 168 regional centers for senior services, and more than 1,500 community service points, in addition to about 3,000 locations for providing meals to the elderly.

The authorities also plan to establish 30,000 home care beds over the next three years and raise the percentage of public hospitals at level two and above that include geriatric departments to over 95% by 2030.
