The wave of protests is escalating in several European countries, driven by rising fuel and food prices, a housing crisis, declining public services, and dissatisfaction with education and wages. Several cities have turned into battlegrounds for confrontations and riots, amid arrests, injuries, looting, and vandalism, coinciding with pivotal electoral deadlines and the rise of far-right parties.

The protests have spread from France and Italy to Spain, Portugal, Albania, and Serbia, at a time when governments are facing increasing public pressure, while far-right movements are exploiting the anger to enhance their political presence.

France.. Confrontations and Arrests

France has witnessed widespread protests that began with student demands for improved school conditions and increased resources, before expanding to include rising living costs and declining public services, with unions and activists joining the movements.

The authorities imposed a partial curfew in areas of Paris and other cities following disturbances that included looting in Paris, Marseille, Lyon, and Bordeaux, as well as the burning of schools and public buildings. In the city of Limoges, flames engulfed the historic town hall building, nearly destroying it completely.

The unrest resulted in the arrest of 2,400 people and hundreds of injuries, while President Emmanuel Macron condemned the violence, affirming accountability for those involved. In contrast, U.S. President Donald Trump blamed immigrants for the vandalism, calling on France to close its borders, although French authorities did not attribute the unrest to them.

Spain and Portugal.. Housing Crisis Ignites the Streets

In Spain, primary and secondary school teachers in Madrid went on an open-ended strike demanding better wages and working conditions, while protest groups set up tents in Puerta del Sol square in the capital to denounce rising rents and housing costs.

The protests expanded to other cities, including Barcelona, which is facing the repercussions of overtourism and rising property prices. The minimum wage in Spain is 1,221 euros, compared to an average monthly rent of around 1,130 euros for an 80-square-meter apartment, reflecting the extent of living pressures.

In Portugal, Lisbon and Porto witnessed similar movements protesting the housing crisis and the difficulty of obtaining affordable housing.

Italy.. Riots and Clashes with Police

In Italy, thousands of people demonstrated at the invitation of the "Italy in the Squares" movement, demanding improved job opportunities, healthcare, education, higher wages, and housing provision.

However, the marches turned into riots in Turin, Bologna, and Milan, where masked individuals clashed with police, looted stores, and set properties on fire. Milan police announced the arrest of 271 people, most of whom were minors, and the injury of 14 security personnel during two days of unrest.

Albania and Serbia.. Protests Against Corruption

In Albania, anti-government protests continue in the capital Tirana, with the participation of university and school students, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama, combating corruption, and protecting public services. Clashes have intensified as the "Flamingo" protest movement expands, which also opposes controversial tourism projects.

Meanwhile, in Serbia, university students continue their protests against corruption, coinciding with the parliamentary elections scheduled for October 25, amid fierce competition and fears of renewed violence.

These developments come at a sensitive time for Europe, with escalating economic and political challenges, increasing pressures on governments, alongside the ongoing war in Ukraine and disputes over ways to support Kyiv and confront what European countries describe as hybrid Russian threats.
