All contemporary societies are suffering from the rising cost of housing, especially for low-income individuals such as students, singles, and those from outside cities who need individual or temporary accommodation, like those who are forced to move to a major city for prolonged treatment. At the same time, with increasing life expectancy and the prevalence of the nuclear family model—where couples live alone with their children without their parents—many elderly individuals are experiencing loneliness. Loneliness for the elderly is more dangerous than just a social and psychological state; it leads to serious and rapid deterioration in mental and physical abilities and contributes to an increased risk of dementia, which makes the elderly unable to care for themselves. The solution to these two dilemmas in the West has been the widespread practice of elderly individuals renting out rooms in their homes to young people, often university students, at a very low cost or even completely free. In return, the young person helps the elderly with their needs and takes care of the house. Many expatriates have tried this system and have had rich social experiences because of it. In several Western countries, governments have offered attractive support programs for university students in exchange for living in the homes of the elderly and contributing to their care. This not only saves the state the cost of caring for the elderly in nursing homes but also provides a deterrent against theft, as criminals often target the homes of elderly individuals living alone, knowing they will be unable to resist them. Moreover, having a young person in the house represents a safety measure in case of a medical emergency that renders the elderly unable to seek help. Additionally, if the tenant pays for their accommodation in the elderly person's home, it provides extra income for the elderly, helping to improve their quality of life, as many elderly individuals suffer due to low financial income. This system also serves as a safeguard against cases of abuse that the elderly may face from unqualified caregivers. The social interactions between the elderly and the young tenant alleviate feelings of isolation and loneliness in the elderly. Young people living with the elderly often teach them how to use modern technology and social media, which contributes to improving their mental capabilities and psychological state. Many elderly individuals pay money to technicians to complete their electronic transactions, a task that the young person living with them can do for free. In the absence of assisting staff, the young tenant acts as an aide to the elderly. Furthermore, it helps the young person psychologically by providing a family atmosphere that compensates for their alienation from their city. Elderly women can also rent rooms in their homes to female students and divorced or widowed women with children who cannot live in their family home and struggle to find low-rent accommodation. In general, there should be an expansion in support areas for the social lifestyle of all isolated groups, whether individually or collectively. Countries like Japan, the USA, Canada, the UK, Italy, Singapore, Egypt, Qatar, India, Haiti, Nepal, and others have integrated nursing homes for the elderly with childcare facilities, creating grandchildren for these elderly individuals and grandparents for orphans. This provides social and psychological support and warmth for both parties and helps prevent abuse that may occur from care staff. The integration may not be complete but can be achieved by creating shared spaces such as a common garden, a shared dining room, and joint social activities like celebrations for occasions. All of this requires government initiatives that encourage social integration patterns for the elderly and provide support programs for university students in exchange for living with and assisting the elderly.
