There are many Iranian statements that boast of one point that remains, to this day, the Achilles' heel of the Iranian regime, and may even be the reason for its downfall or disintegration: control and influence. There has been an unusual Iranian fervor that has characterized the path of this regime since its inception in 1979 to the present day, aimed at dominating the Arab region, even if it means burning Iran and the regime itself.
For years, Iranian officials have boasted about what they considered the "extension of Iran's geographical power to the Eastern Mediterranean," about the expansion of what they termed "traditional deterrence," and that no issue in the region can be resolved without Tehran's will, as stated, for example, by Hossein Salami, the commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard who was killed by Israel in 2025, culminating in the famous statement by an Iranian official that Iran "controls four Arab capitals" and that the Houthis, who attack the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, are "one of the results of the Iranian revolution." There are many similar Iranian statements, just like the current boasts of the pillars of the Iranian regime about the policy of "raising the cost for Arab countries" under various pretexts for a single goal.
Here lies the problem of the current Iranian regime, or rather its dilemma. It is the Arab countries and breaking the model they represent, foremost among them the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. If Iran's problem with Iraq, as I mentioned in my article last week, is geography and military power, its problem with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is larger, broader, and deeper; it relates to role, weight, and status.
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has troubled Iran since the establishment of its regime in 1979. Iran dreams of greatness in our region, not through development, progress, and partnerships, but through destruction, aggression, and control. Since the establishment of the Iranian regime, the Iranian leader Khomeini attacked the Gulf states and tried in vain to impose himself as "the protector of Muslims," but he lost that bet. Therefore, it was necessary to exploit the Palestinian issue through the Iranian revolution, which claims to support the "oppressed," in order to expand in the Arab world, and it has relatively succeeded at a certain stage in penetrating Arab societies in countries like Lebanon and Syria, which are territories occupied by Israel.
The fall of Iraq in 2003 presented an opportunity for Iran to expand its influence and to shift the balance of power in its favor. For years, it worked to besiege the Kingdom, but to no avail, leading to its step of supporting the Houthis since 2009.
From Lebanon to Syria, Iraq, and Yemen, everything Iran has sown in undermining state sovereignty for decades in these countries, for which we are paying the price today, has not been enough. Every time it destroyed the capabilities of the countries in the region, the Kingdom laid a stone for building and progress.
Today, Iran continues its project of targeting the Kingdom and, through it, the entire Arab region. Here, it is important to note that even if the interests of some countries intersect with what Iran is doing through its proxy, the Houthi group in the Red Sea, and they benefit from it to pressure Saudi Arabia, Iran itself, in the calculations of these countries, is merely a temporary tool, just as it uses its tools in the countries of the region. Everyone understands that it is impossible to politically, religiously, and economically bypass the Kingdom, and that the security of the Kingdom is the security of the region.
There is a characteristic that has accompanied the history of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia since the establishment of its state 96 years ago to this day: weight, a characteristic that has accompanied the Kingdom's path through all its fluctuations and the events it has experienced both internally and externally.
This weight is an equation imposed by nature for both the internal and external realms, that there is a red line that no one can cross or break. The idea of inheriting the Kingdom is a death sentence for those who fall into its trap, and this is what Iran still does not understand.
