Four people have died in the Netherlands due to West Nile virus infections over the past few weeks, bringing the total number of deaths from the virus in the country this year to nine cases, while the number of infections has reached 56 since the first case was recorded last August, the first time in six years.

The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment in the Netherlands reported that the spread of the virus has likely peaked, with a decline in new infections over the past few weeks, as the virus is often transmitted through mosquito bites.

The World Health Organization explained that rising temperatures provide mosquitoes with more time and space to spread the West Nile virus across Europe, noting an increase in cases in Greece and Italy as well.
