A large British study has found a link between regularly consuming very hot tea or coffee and an increased risk of a type of esophageal cancer, after analyzing data from nearly 980,000 adults in the UK.
Researchers from the University of Oxford analyzed the participants' data and found that individuals who were accustomed to drinking beverages at temperatures of 65 degrees Celsius or higher were about three times more likely to develop esophageal squamous cell carcinoma compared to those who consumed warm drinks.
Results also showed that consuming six or more hot beverages daily was associated with increased risks, while adding milk may help lower the temperature of the drink, although this does not necessarily mean it reaches a level below 65 degrees Celsius.
Dr. Kiren Papier, the lead researcher and senior nutritional epidemiologist in the Department of Population Health Sciences at the University of Oxford, stated that previous studies have linked the consumption of very hot beverages to an increased risk of certain types of esophageal cancer, but it was unclear how this applied to the common temperatures of hot drinks in Western societies.
Despite the increased relative risk among those who consume very hot beverages, the absolute risk of developing the cancer remains low, as the UK Cancer Research Foundation indicates that the lifetime risk of developing esophageal squamous cell carcinoma in the UK is about 1%.
The researchers emphasized that the study is observational, meaning it showed a correlation between beverage temperature and cancer risk, but it does not prove that very hot drinks directly cause cancer, noting the need for further research to understand the relationship more accurately.
