A police dog led search and rescue teams to three children who went missing after straying from their family camp in Colorado, USA, bringing an extensive search operation that lasted for hours to a successful conclusion as they were found alive and unharmed.

The children, a 9-year-old boy and two 6-year-old girls, were on a camping trip with a large group of their family near the Midland Bike Trail east of Buena Vista when the family noticed their disappearance around 9 AM.

Two hours of searching

Family members searched for the children themselves for about two hours without success before notifying the authorities, who launched a large-scale search operation involving rescue teams, volunteers, drones, and a helicopter, in addition to teams combing the area on foot.

As the search continued, authorities enlisted the help of the police dog "Archie," known as "Arch," who picked up the children's scent from the campsite and quickly began leading rescuers through the surrounding wilderness.

Scent of a toy leads to the trail

Footage later released by the authorities showed police officers giving "Arch" a scent taken from a small toy belonging to the children, before he set off tracking their path through the rugged terrain.

As the dog pinpointed the direction the children had taken, rescue teams moved to higher areas in the same direction, before they were able to spot the children and find them.

2.4 kilometers from the camp

The children were found around 2 PM, approximately 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) from the campsite, about five hours after they were noticed missing, and their safety was confirmed with none of them sustaining injuries.

The children were returned to their family, while the Chaffee County Sheriff praised the quick response of the search and rescue teams and the role played by the dog "Arch" in determining the direction the children took and finding them safe.
