A tornado swept through the Australian town of Oladola, causing outdoor furniture to fly and eliciting gasps of shock from passersby.

The tornado struck the town located a little over 226 kilometers (140 miles) south of Sydney on Saturday afternoon, amid strong winds and heavy rain.

Videos circulating on social media showed the tornado tearing through a residential area, as fierce winds and rain battered homes and gardens violently.

The national broadcaster (ABC) reported that emergency teams received more than 12 reports about the tornado, after the winds caused trees to fall on power lines.

Julius Machado, a local café owner, said the storm hit the area "in the blink of an eye," adding: "We had to close early to do cleanup... all the cups and plates were shattered and scattered everywhere; it was extremely chaotic."

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology reported that the occurrence of a tornado in a populated area like this is considered rare.
