Seventeen people were killed and others were injured on Saturday in a collision involving several vehicles in the Salama area of Kenya while they were heading to a religious shrine, according to the National Transport Authority and the Catholic Church.

The National Transportation Safety Authority reported that the accident occurred about 90 kilometers southeast of Nairobi, on the road connecting the capital to the coastal city of Mombasa.

The Mombasa Archdiocese stated that the 17 deceased were worshippers from a local church, and they were on their way to a religious shrine in Subukia, about 200 kilometers northwest of Nairobi, to participate in a "National Day of Prayer" organized there on Saturday.

The Archbishop expressed "deep sorrow and profound grief" over the fatalities in a statement, while Kenyan President William Ruto extended his condolences to the families of the victims, their friends, and the entire Catholic community.

The Nation newspaper quoted an unnamed security source stating that the victims were traveling in a minibus that accommodates 14 passengers when it was struck from behind by a truck that had veered towards them after colliding with another truck.
