Tensions between Ethiopia and Eritrea have entered a new phase of escalation, after eyewitnesses and an international conflict monitoring organization reported today (Thursday) that Ethiopian drones launched strikes on Eritrean forces in the city of Adigrat, north of the Tigray region, just days after Asmara announced the severing of diplomatic relations with Addis Ababa.

The organization "Aklid," which monitors conflicts, stated that Adigrat, near the Eritrean border, was subjected to "multiple drone strikes" targeting Eritrean forces and munitions during the night, while one resident told Agence France-Presse about a "very large number" of airstrikes.

Witnesses and experts reported yesterday that Eritrean soldiers entered Adigrat in military vehicles, while Eritrean Information Minister Yemane Gebre Meskel denied the presence of his country's forces in the city, considering those accounts to be "part of an Ethiopian scheme to justify launching an aggressive war" against Eritrea.

Meskel stated that Ethiopia is trying to present any potential war as "self-defense" by making allegations against Asmara, emphasizing that his country connects the unfolding developments.

The escalation came after Eritrea announced at the beginning of October the severing of its diplomatic relations with Ethiopia, in response to Addis Ababa closing its embassy in Asmara and expelling 10 Eritrean diplomats, including the chargé d'affaires and diplomats accredited to the African Union.

The United States has warned of the implications of the escalation and called on Asmara and Addis Ababa to exercise restraint, stressing that the outbreak of a new conflict could threaten U.S. cooperation with both countries.

The roots of the tension trace back to the setback in relations that had improved after the peace agreement signed in 2018, which ended decades of estrangement and opened the borders between the two countries. However, relations deteriorated again during the Tigray War between 2020 and 2022, in which Eritrea fought alongside Ethiopian forces against the "Tigray People's Liberation Front."

Addis Ababa accuses Asmara of supporting the front, while Eritrea fears that landlocked Ethiopia may seek to gain direct access to the Red Sea at the expense of its territory.

No official statements have yet been issued from either the Ethiopian or Eritrean governments regarding the airstrikes, while developments in Tigray raise concerns about the widening of confrontation between the two neighbors.
